Weekend in Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Little town of approximately 10 000 people, including my new "date".

When one decides to spend an entire weekend with her new "flame", one does not really want to spend said weekend cooking up a storm.

So comes the idea to explore the town's local restaurants because, while you're at it, might as well avoid food chains and allow yourself to discover what this town has to offer!

As (most) everyone knows, there is growing interest for food trucks. Everywhere (or almost) you look, a new one pops up. From fast food, to cookies, to fusion cuisine, if it exists there is probably a food truck selling it! In the case of Smiths Falls' food trucks, most of them are chip wagons; meaning they sell fast food! But not all fast food was created equal!

Take the case of Britt's Chips. On the outside, you see a normal food truck. The usual ketchup and other condiments lining up on the counter before the screen where you order. Where Britt's Chips becomes interesting is in the quality of the food they serve you. It may be "junk" but they have mastered the art of preparing "tasty junk".

On my first night in Smiths Falls, we took a short walk and chose to try its poutine. Now I come from Québec where poutine is an art, after all, we came up with this delicacy. So I have tried many poutines, traditional and not, to varying degrees of success. Britt's poutine is one of the best ones I have ever had and that is saying something...considering I have had the "original" from the restaurant that invented it. The fries are crispy (and hot), the gravy is rich and very tasty AND they use cheese curds! No grated mozzarella here!

Second night...we again took that short walk to Britt's...and tried their fish and chips meal. I have never in my entire life known of a food truck that serves that kind of food. I was also told that this meal is especially popular on Fridays. To say it was tasty would be a gross understatement. While it may not be their specialty, they make the effort to provide you with lemon and cole slaw. I was impressed both by the fact that a food truck would have that on their menu and the quality of the product.

But what about breakfast you say? Our first morning, we went with a quick and safe option...McMuffins from McDonald. On Sunday, which would be our last few moments together,  we chose to go to a "sit down" family owned restaurant called Roosteraunt. When "new flame" asked me if I was afraid of roosters, I laughed! But I have to admit, had I been scare of that creature, this restaurant would have terrified me! There are roosters everywhere! On shelves, on walls, next to your table and close to the windows, roosters as far as the eye can see!

Is the food good you ask. Yes, it is. The restaurant was extremely busy and service was a tad slow but once the plates made their way to us, they were worth the wait. We did have to ask for a coffee refill but once again, blame that on the fact that the place was packed!

So there you have it...my little adventure into Smiths Falls...
